Undergraduate study

Our BSc Biological Sciences, BSc Biochemistry and BSc Biological and Medicinal Chemistry programmes allow you to choose up to 30 credits of modules per year in another subject, to develop career-related skills or widen your intellectual horizons.​

If you pass 60 credits of modules from one of the options below, you will be entitled to add the words 'with proficiency in' to your degree title when you graduate:

• Proficiency in a Foreign Language
• Proficiency in Law
• Proficiency in Social Data Science
• Proficiency in Entrepreneurship
• Proficiency in Leadership

BSc Biological Sciences and MSci Biological Sciences students can choose to specialise in one of three named specialisms:​

• Animal Biology
• Microbiology and Infectious Disease
• Molecular and Cellular Biology

In your final year of study, you complete an 8 month research project aiming to develop your ability to conduct and report scientific research within the broad discipline of Biosciences, and develop your employability skills for future careers. ​

• Reviewing literature relevant to your project​
• Scientific critique​
• Project planning​
• Laboratory scientific methods (for lab-based projects)​
• Working collaboratively within Biosciences research teams​
• Problem-solving​
• Analysis and synthesis of material including data​

A variety of project types will be offered including research laboratory-based, field-based, bioinformatics, meta-analysis, and scientific literature-based (scientific critique, analysis and synthesis of material including data). Increasing independence in the work/research environment and in time management is encouraged and supported. Both group and individual projects may be offered.​

The research project is assessed with a written report and oral or poster presentation presented at our ‘Final year student conference’ event.
